Famous Cookies from Sienna

When I was living in the soothing, undulating hills of the Val d’Orcia (an area recently made more famous by the filming of The English Patient), it was only a short drive to Sienna where I could feast on fabulous cookies called ricciarelli. One can buy them in many pastry shops, but the ones I liked best were made by San Domenico’s on Via del Paradiso. I also found more in Pienza, Montalcino and Montepulciano, and other villages around Sienna. They seem to be the regional cookie in these parts; eating one proves why.
